The block might live infriction
The same stuck feeling can have very different causes. Our working map names the mechanism—seven domains where creative work gets stuck, plus one look-alike that isn't a block at all.
Our evidence-based blocks map
Want a useful first hypothesis? The questionnaire can help you notice which patterns fit. It is a starting point—not a diagnosis or a definitive answer.

The 7+1 map is our evidence-informed synthesis, not a clinical diagnosis or a universally agreed taxonomy. See the research we draw from, what it can tell us, and where its limits still are.
About the map.
You often won't at first, and that is fine. Open a few, notice what lands, or take the questionnaire—the name is a starting hypothesis, not a diagnosis.
Almost always. Two or three are usually open together, feeding each other. We read your state first, then follow the symptom back to the driver.
No—it only looks like one. It is the honest trapdoor: the answer is learning or practice, not coaching, and we say so rather than keep you in the service.
Our own synthesis across creative-block research, psychology and practice—not a single published taxonomy, but the working model we built from them.
Bring the work. We'll find the door together.
Starting & Doing
The gap between deciding and doing. The intention is real and the idea is clear enough—it just will not leave your head and reach the page. Starting, keeping momentum, and finishing all feel heavier than they should.
Sounds like you?
- I keep preparing instead of starting
- Procrastination I can't explain
- A drawer of unfinished projects
- I start strong, then stall
- I never quite finish
What is often underneath
Avoidance doing a protective job, or perfectionism raising the cost of a first move until starting feels unsafe.
Confidence & Exposure
The work feels unsafe to show, or like a verdict on your worth rather than a draft. Finishing can feel more dangerous than starting, because finishing means being seen and judged.
Sounds like you?
- Impostor feelings that won't quiet
- Finishing feels dangerous
- Feedback knocked my confidence
- It must be perfect before anyone sees it
- I downplay what I make
What is often underneath
Identity fusion—self-worth tied directly to output—and a fear of rejection that makes every decision feel like a test of your value.
Direction & Meaning
Either too many possible paths and no way to commit, or no reason that still genuinely pulls. The engine runs, but there is nowhere it truly wants to go.
Sounds like you?
- Too many ideas, no priority
- I've lost why I'm doing this
- Bigger questions about vocation
- The work no longer feels like mine
- I keep switching direction
What is often underneath
Drained motivation, or a values and identity question the work alone cannot answer.
Energy & Recovery
Capacity, not willpower, is the real problem. The ideas may be there, but there is nothing left to bring them out with. Pushing harder only deepens the debt.
Sounds like you?
- Nothing flows however hard I push
- I'm running on empty
- Exhausted before I begin
- I've stopped caring, and that scares me
- Rest doesn't seem to help
What is often underneath
Burnout—system-wide fatigue where energy, motivation and emotional capacity collapse together. The block is a late-stage symptom, not the cause.
The Work Itself
Not fear, not fatigue—a genuine craft or process problem, or a true dead end that needs solving on its own terms. Sometimes the work really is the thing that is stuck.
Sounds like you?
- The idea isn't working
- I'm stuck on one approach
- I can't see another way through
- The materials fight me
- It's technically beyond me right now
What is often underneath
Fixation on an early idea that crowds out alternatives—or a genuine craft gap worth naming honestly.
Structure & Workflow
The setup around the work keeps getting in the way. The problem is not you or the idea—it is the shape of how the work is organised, sequenced and scoped.
Sounds like you?
- Chaotic workflow
- The project is too big
- The wrong setup
- Constant distractions
- I can't find where to start in the mess
What is often underneath
Overload and decision friction eating the energy needed to start—so the system, not the person, needs the redesign.
Context & Support
The people and conditions around the work undermine it—often invisibly, until you name them. Even strong work stalls in an environment that punishes exploration.
Sounds like you?
- An unclear brief
- Too many decision-makers
- Feedback that stings but doesn't help
- Missing support
- No safety to take risks
What is often underneath
Unsafe feedback and environments that punish exploration, which teach you to stop taking creative risks.
A Skill Gap
A missing capability that mimics a block. It feels like being stuck, but no amount of coaching will move it—because there is nothing hidden to uncover.
Sounds like you?
- I don't know how to do this yet
- It's not fear—it's a gap
- I need to learn the craft
- I'm guessing at the technique
What is often underneath
Nothing hidden—this one is honest. The response is teaching or deliberate practice, not coaching, and we say so rather than keeping you inside the service.
